Demo Sites

Rural BioReFarmeries will demonstrate the environmental and economic viability and technical suitability of small-scale decentralised green biorefinery models.

To achieve this, the project will set up three demonstration sites in Ireland, Denmark and The Netherlands that will bring together a multidisciplinary team of stakeholders, from primary producers to material development specialists. Working with a farmer-centered approach, the end goal is to deliver a full value chain approach that can be widely adopted and replicated across rural grassland regions in the EU.

The role of the demo sites

Farm Zero C in Ireland, Aarhus University’s Green Biorefining Demonstration Platform in Denmark, and WUR’s Application Centre for Renewable Resources (ACRRES) in the Netherlands have been selected as the three demo sites, based on their core expertise in green biorefining.

They will focus on testing different biorefinery value chain approaches, including different feedstock mixtures, scales, logistical plans, biorefinery processes and products, collecting data from both farm and biorefinery operations and processes.

Collectively, their work will help to inform the development of scenarios which will be further exploited and replicated through follow-up project activities and networks.

A collaborative approach

To add further value to the two small-scale decentralized green biorefinery demonstrators, the value chains will link to additional downstream demo sites led by some of the project’s partners, including:

  • Carbery’s dairy products and ingredients plant
  • Barryroe Co-operative’s feed ingredients mills
  • Carhue Piggeries pig farm
  • Paperfoam’s eco-packaging production facility
  • AlgaNed’s microalgae production facilities

The scale up and validation of processes and products will be further supported by our academic research partners from all across Europe.
